League of Legends is finally getting a port. Riot Games announced that it is bringing the multiplayer online battle arena to iOS and Android in 2020. The publisher launched a trailer for League of Legends: Wild Rift, and it is promising to begin rolling out some beta tests before the end of the year.
League of Legends: Wild Rift is not just the PC version running on smartphones. Riot is adapting the game for touch devices with some key changes. The map is slightly different to facilitate shorter matches. So instead of spending 45 minutes in a battle, Riot is going for something closer to 15-to-20 minutes.
The announcement was made during the League of Legends 10th anniversary livestream, where League's Executive Producer, Michael Chow, made the case for League of Legends: Wild Rift. "For years, many of you have been telling us that the marquee League PC experience is sometimes tough to fit into your lifestyle which can change from one week to the next, one month to the next, one year to the next. You've also been telling us that you simply can't play League with a lot of the friends you love to game with, just because of their lifestyles and because League takes a long time to learn. So we built a new Rift that you can play on console and mobile."
The game looks just like the desktop version, though the user interface and buttons are all smooshed into a mobile screen. The graphics and models look mostly the same, but there’s no telling what damage this will do on your phones’ battery. You’re likely not going to want to give this mobile port a go in a public place unless you have a battery bank and a steady internet connection on hand. The games in Wild Rift are designed to take about 15-20 minutes, as opposed to the desktop League games that can take over 30. Wild Rift will also come to consoles, Riot says, but the company did not specify which platforms or offer a release window.
