Red Dead Redemption 2 is now available to buy on Steam, but the PC launch again hasn't gone smoothly. The game's release has been received with mixed reviews thanks to the Rockstar Games Launcher and technical issues, and numerous players have reported that the title has been crashing for them when trying to start it up.
Rockstar Games had a month to deal with these issues and fix Red Dead Redemption 2. But it is quite clear Rockstar Games need more time to deal with it. In its current stat Red Dead Redemption 2’s Steam version isn’t worth buying, says one user on Steam. Rockstar Games hasn’t released any statements regarding the game’s optimization issues and Rockstar Launcher problems.
Rockstar have fixed a fair few crashes and performance issues in patches since November’s PC debut. It clearly still needs more work. It’s a shame that, for many, all this is spoiling what is really quite an impressive game. Our Matthew’s Red Dead Redemption 2 PC review called it “the definitive version of the definitive Rockstar game, warts and all.” If you can run it but could use a few more frames, Katharine’s performance guide might help.
One common issue appears to be Rockstar Launcher’s implementation with Steam, which you need to install and log into before you can play. Many, however, are getting errors telling them they don’t own the game, while others are being asked to verify game files, which doesn’t lead to success.
Rockstar hasn’t addressed the Steam crashes yet, but given how they’ve been rapidly patching the Rockstar Games Launcher version, one hopes that same expediency is given to the Steam version, even though it could be said that after a month, one would expect a secondary launch to go smoothly.
